The market for "EU boosters" is now almost unclear and new manufacturers are constantly pushing into the market or established manufacturers are bringing out new products. A well-established player in this jungle is the manufacturer ESN, which has been on the market since 2005 and covers a broad portfolio of supplements. In addition, ESN advertises with the slogan "Made in Germany" and researches, develops and produces in-house. With his training booster Crank he definitely has a bestseller in his range and therefore it is time to present it here as well.

Ingredients: ESN CRANK
A total of 14 active ingredients are listed, all individually and in their respective dosages. For this I should like to praise the transparency. Also important to mention for all vegetarians and vegans: Only vegetable raw materials are included here.
The serving size is 1 scoop or 19 grams and contains a total of 20 servings.
Let's get to the individual ingredients and their dosages:
Citrulline Malate: Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, so the body can also produce it itself. While it is at Citrulline is about the basic substance is at Citrulline-Malat the amino acid Citrulline bound to an ester and is usually in a ratio of 2: 1 (Citrulline to malate). The Citrulline ensures increased nitrogen oxide production in the body and thus better blood circulation, which in turn provides the popular pump. The malate optimizes the aerobic metabolism and improves the energy supply to the muscles, so that longer training units can be carried out well.
The dosage is 6000 mg, a very good dosage (most studies agree too Citrulline Malate are carried out with dosages of 6000 - 8000 mg).
Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate: This is a highly bioavailable form of Arginine. Arginine in turn, is an essential starting material for the formation of nitric oxide and ensures a widening of the blood vessels, an improvement of the blood circulation and an improved supply of nutrients to the muscles. All of this also results in a pump effect. With a dosage of 4000 mg, this is also a very good dosage.
Side note: Citrulline and Arginine make the perfect complement, as both work in the same way, but with a time lag. Out Arginine nitric oxide is formed immediately while Citrulline a preliminary stage of Arginine represents and is therefore only transformed.
L-tyrosine: L-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid and the precursor of dopamine, which has a mood-enhancing effect. Overall should tyrosine Reduce stress and increase alertness and focus. With 1000 mg, we are also in the recommended range, which is 500 - 1000 mg.
L-Glycin: Glycine is also a non-essential amino acid. Various effects are ascribed to glycine, such as an anti-catabolic and at the same time anabolic effect. But the pump also benefits from this active ingredient. The recommended dosage is 1000-3000 mg per day. Here exactly these 1000 mg are contained.
Taurine: Taurine, also a non-essential amino acid, should be best known from a well-known energy drink (the one that gives flüüüüüügel) 😉. Taurine is considered a natural stimulant and helps to stimulate fat burning. Promotes on a cognitive level Taurine mental performance and also antioxidant properties will be Taurine said. It also supports the effect of Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate and the Citrulline. 1000 mg is a good dosage, as common dosage recommendations are 1000-3000 mg.
Glucuronolactone: Glucuronolactone is a carbohydrate that is part of the connective tissue of many animals and plant fibers and mucilage. Glucuronolactone is said to have performance-enhancing properties, especially in combination with Caffeine. Common dosage recommendations do not exist. 2400 mg per liter are permitted for energy drinks in Germany. 500 mg are added to the crank.
Green tea extract: The range of ascribed effects is wide. Green tea extract has anti-inflammatory effects, lowers blood pressure, and promotes heart health. The attributed effect of a (slightly) increased fat burning is particularly relevant for athletes. As a natural source of theanine it also inhibits the side effects of caffeine. The dosage recommendations are between 250 and 500 mg. Here we have included 250 mg. So again a very good dosage.
Grape seed extract: Grape seed extract works primarily as an antioxidant. The dosage recommendations vary, around 1 - 2 mg per kilogram of body weight are common. Here is a dosage of 250 mg. In addition, the grape seed extract also stimulates the enzyme NO synthase and thus helps that Arginine in Citrulline is converted.
Schizandra extract: The positive effects are manifold and extensive. Schizandra has a positive effect on the liver, has an effect on the immune system, strengthens the elasticity of the skin, has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects as well as positive effects on endurance and the cardiovascular system. In particular, the anti-inflammatory aspects and the effect on endurance make this active ingredient interesting in training boosters. The dosage recommendations vary from 500 to 2000 mg. It only contains 200 mg.
Bitter orange peel extract or synephrine: synephrine stimulates the beta receptors, which play a key role in burning fat. On top of that the active ingredient also inhibits appetite. Synephrine works like Caffeine, on the cardiovascular system. Both substances can mutually reinforce their effects. Of the 100 mg Bitter orange peel extract 6 mg synephrine are found. However, a daily amount of 30 mg synephrine is recommended.
Ginseng root extract: The best-known effect is to improve mental performance. The recommended dosage is 1000 mg. It only contains 100 mg.
Rhodolia Rosea Extract: Also known as rose root. In particular, it has an effect on mood, anaerobic performance and reduces fatigue.
The dosage recommendations for daily intake are between 300 and 700 mg. Much lower doses of around 50 mg can also prevent symptoms of fatigue, although daily intake is important here. It contains 100 mg.
Pepper extract or Piperine: Piperine is mainly used to increase the bioavailability of other active ingredients. With 4 mg the Piperine Dosage slightly below the usual dosages, which are usually 5 to 10 mg.
The ingredients read well coordinated. It also contains some interesting substances that are not necessarily found in other boosters of this type or are rarely found (e.g. Glucuronolactone, Schizandra, Ginseng Root). However, it is noticeable that most of the ingredients are dosed quite low. It remains to be seen whether a synergistic effect can resolve this imbalance.
Package design: ESN CRANK
The crank comes along calmly and simply. The ESN lettering is tone-on-tone on the lid of the black can, and the Crank lettering is emblazoned on the front. On the back you will find the nutritional information as well as the consumption information in accordance with the legal requirements. There are no complaints here.
ESN CRANK - flavor (s) and solubility
The crank is available in 4 flavors, these are:
- Fresh berry juice
- Tropical Punch
We also tested the Fresh Berry Juice variant. The recommended dose is 1 scoop (19 grams). The recommended amount of liquid is 550 ml.
After shaking, the powder dissolves almost without leaving any residue, there is little or nothing to complain about here.
The drink turns slightly cloudy orange and the taste is mainly "orange" in the mouth, with a slight sweetness and a slightly sour aftertaste due to the Citrulline. Overall, the taste is very good and pleasant.
Effect: ESN CRANK
First of all: No booster works the same for all consumers, so effect reports are always subjective experience reports. The crank has been tested several times by two team members; the sensations were similar in both. The recommended consumption of 1 scoop was used for testing.
🤓 alertness and energy (8/10)
This is where the crank delivers. 300 mg Caffeine (as I said: with a full scoop) provide a lot of energy for training and give you the necessary motivation. The crank does not "kick" immediately from 0 to 100, the energy level builds up steadily and continuously and reaches its peak approx. 20-30 minutes after ingestion.
🤯 Focus and Drive (7/10)
Even on bad days, the crank lifts your spirits. This could already be the conclusion here. Do not expect tunnel vision during training, but there is still good motivation and focus on your training.
💪 Pump and Vascularity (6/10)
There is still some room for improvement here, even with a double dose of a whole scoop it is noticeable that one or the other pump active ingredient is missing here. Solid, but not more.
😈 Performance and exhaustion (8/10)
The performance is on a good level, you don't overdrive or oversteer. A 2-hour training session at a high level is no problem with the crank and is definitely fun.
☠️ End of action and side effects (10/10)
The effect wears off after about two hours, and there are no side effects. Definitely thumbs up here.
Price-performance ratio: Solid average
The regular price is 29,95 euros for 20 servings. This corresponds to a portion price of around 1,50 euros. This means that the crank is absolutely in the price average.
We can absolutely understand why the ESN crank has its place among the top EU boosters and is one of ESN's bestsellers. It's a consistently good product, the label is transparency, the price is absolutely reasonable, the energy level is at a high level and the motivation and focus are also right. Only in the pumps and vascularity category could the crank not completely convince us.
- Good energy level
- No unwanted side effects
- Tastes good
- Pump and vascularity below average
- Portion size realistically closer to 20 servings
